Was easy to replace and my shaver works better than new (Posted on 12/29/2023)

The battery I receivedmfrom ShaverOutlet is a tabbed NiCad made by Tenergy. I've used a number of Tenergy batteries in the past in numerous other devices and they are very good quality cells. I found my Norelco 3605 in a second-hand store. It had received very little use and was in great shape. I didn't realize that the one I had was over 20 years old until I found that it wouldn't charge and opened it up to check the battery. I think it's a 2/3A sized cell that has nickel solder tabs welded on each end. Since the original battery had a 1999 date code, I knew that it wasn't going to be saveable. ShaverOutlet had the best price by far on the exact replacement and they shipped it out fast.

To fix one of these shavers yourself, you do need to have a set of long-shafted Torx drivers to take it apart. Other than that, about all you need is a 60W soldering iron, some decent-quality electronic solder (I use 63/37 tin-lead) and perhaps a non-corrosive liquid or paste flux. The sheet nickel tabs on the battery tin better if you keep a little flux on the work as you tin it.

So all you have to do is open up the shaver, unsolder the old battery, dispose of that properly (at some point), tin the tabs on the new battery and then solder it in where the old battery went (obviously. mind the battery polarity or the shaver will run backwards). Put the case halves together and reinsert the Torx screws. That's it.

I precharged my replacement cell on a NiCad smart charger before soldering it in. Otherwise, you have to charge the shaver for about 16 hours before the replacement battery will be full. It's agood idea to run the battery completely up and then completely down a few times when it's new. That helps to maximize its energy storage capacity over its service life.

The reason it's a good idea to revive those old Norelco if they aren't shot is that of performance. The quality of the components in those shavers seems to be higher in the older models. Their motors have a lot of torque so the shave goes smoothly and quickly.

So if you can make a simple solder joint and have a few long-handled Torx head screw drivers around; it is DEFINITELY worth fixing one of those older Norelcos.

This replacement battery worked perfectly and was simple enough to replace since I have soldering experience. The YouTube video was a terrific help and made it easy to decide where to purchase a replacement battery. Saved me a ton of money. (Posted on 3/29/2014)
